Letting Your Stories Live On!

As a lover of books, there is probably a good chance that you have some books that you would like to donate! However, you are probably wondering where you can take them to make sure that they end up in the hands of people who will cherish them the way that you have, right?

The easiest and most convenient way to get your books to us is to place them in one of our book collection bins!!

book bin

Not sure what that means? Not to worry. This week we will give you the ins and outs on how to donate your books to Discover Books easily and effectively. Trust us when we tell you that we will find a happy, new home for your gently used stories!

First thing’s first…finding a book bin. We have tried to make this step as easy as possible. Visit our website, www.discoverbooks.com, and click on the “Our Program” tab. Next, click the “Get Involved” tab and you are almost there! All you have to do now is enter your zip code and it will tell you where the 5 closest book collection bins are according to your location!

The next step is to place your books in the slot at the top. They will fall into the bin, similar to the way that a library book return works, and will be safely locked inside the box until the next scheduled pickup.

That’s basically it! Take a look at the decal on the front of the bin or click here to see the process of our book donation program in more detail! It really is quite amazing.

Interested in Hosting a Book Bin?!

Do you have a local business or know someone with a spot that would be great for a book bin?! We love when people are interested in helping us collect books.

If you have a spot for a book bin, or know someone who would be interested in hosting one, give us a call at 1-888-402-BOOK. Select the option that best describes your location and you will be directed to the manager for your region. Once we get permission to place the bin, we can drop it off within a few days and you will be aiding us in our mission of letting the stories live on! Yay!!

Rock ‘N’ Read Success!!

Welcome to our blog post for this week! We are thrilled that you joined us because we have a special treat for all of our followers. This past Saturday, July 16, 2016, one of our many charitable partners, Velocity of Books, hosted a massive book donation event!! The event, Rock ‘N’ Read, took place in Rockville, MD on Nelson Mandela Day, to celebrate reading and literacy!

Discover Books was honored to be a part of the event and donated over 10,000 books to help this amazing cause.

There was music, face-painting, games, dancing and most of all, tons of happy readers who got to take home handfuls of free books!  You heard right…handfuls of free books! The event was complete with countless volunteers who helped set up, coordinate stations and restock bookshelves throughout the day, Star Wars characters collecting donations, some furry friends who stopped by for a quick read and even a REAL LIVE POKEMON!!

Our photographer took plenty of photos and we wanted to share them in a photo blog for you this week. We hope you can feel as much happiness from these photos as we saw on Saturday!

Not Into Summer Reading…Think Again!

If you are anything like us, here at Discover Books, you love reading…regardless of what time of year it might be. We look forward to summer especially, because it is one of the most relaxing times of the year with warm weather, longer days and…you guessed it…vacation!!

However, a lot of younger readers and students might feel differently. We get it…Reading books all school year long can be exhausting and we can surely understand why some students don’t even want to LOOK at a book over the summer. Spending time outside with friends in the pool or the sprinkler, eating ice cream and catching lightning bugs…these activities all sound a lot more summer-y than reading.

But, make no mistake about it – Reading over the summer is extremely important and we are here to tell you why. There is extensive research about the benefits of summer reading for all ages. Readingrockets.org says:

“Children who don’t read during the summer can lose up to three months of reading progress and that loss has a cumulative, long-term effect.”

We definitely want to avoid that right?!? Click here to visit their summer reading website, equipped with tons of resources to help your family stay on track over the summer months!

Also, Scholastic has compiled a list of 10 Critical Facts about Summer Reading and some of them will blow your mind! A few of them that we thought were interesting were:

1) Regardless of ethnicity, socioeconomic level, or previous achievement, children who read four or more books over the summer fare better on reading-comprehension tests in the fall than their peers who read one or no books over the summer. – If that doesn’t make you want to get reading over the summer, I don’t know what will! BRAIN POWERRR!!

2) Teachers typically spend between 4 to 6 weeks re-teaching material students have forgotten over the summer. – We love our teachers so let’s do them a favor and read over the summer…it’s a win-win for everyone right?!

3) An overwhelming 92% of kids say they are more likely to finish a book they picked out themselves. – No problem! Head to your local library or to www.discoverbooks.com and let your child pick out affordable books that they love right now!

There are no if’s, and’s or but’s about it. We know that summer reading is important. Sure…it can be intimidating if you don’t know where to start but luckily, there is still plenty of time left to get involved. A good starting point is your local library. Ask them if they have a summer reading program and I’m sure they would love to help you and your family get started now!

Happy Summer Reading!

What Matters the Most?

Here at Discover Books, we re-purpose millions of books every single year. We are proud to say that we do our very best to keep books out of landfills and find new homes for them so that the stories can be retold again and again to new readers!

We wouldn’t be able to do any of this wonderful work without our loyal followers and those people who donate to us. Because of you, we are able to continue on our mission to Let The Stories Live On so we want to send out a big, heartfelt “THANK YOU!” for all of the books you have donated to us over the years and will continue to donate in the future! Continuing to donate and to spread the word about Discover Books the world to us…but it means even more to another special group of people as well….wondering who?? Keep reading!

One question that we get ALL of the time is “So, what do you do with the books?”…and we LOVE answering this question! As we mentioned, we try to re-purpose them in any way we can. Some are recycled to become new items like home insulation and newspaper print. Others are used to stock the shelves of our online bookstore at www.discoverbooks.com.

But the BEST part of our re-purposing process and the part that matters most, is DEFINITELY the ability to donate to young readers across the country and around the world to promote literacy!

Instead of telling you in words how much of an impact your donations have had on the lives of these young readers, we thought it would be much more fun to show you! Below we have compiled the happiest series of photos that you will ever see. These smiling faces will cherish the stories that they have been given for years and years to come. We couldn’t be more excited to show you what we mean! You can see even more smiling faces on our Facebook and Twitter pages now!

Enjoy and keep donating!
